Last Saturday we dropped off our precious little gal to stay 5 nights with her Abby and Papi.
They got to work right away by pushing her in the swing.
We flew out on Sunday morning at about 5 a.m. for our 4 day/4 night getaway to Kennebunkport, Maine.
The view from the air was stunning.
Trinity and I landed in Portland and drove straight to The Portland Lobster Company for the best lobster rolls of our lives.
Or as people in Maine say, "lobstah."
They also say that things are wicked good.
In fact I heard the term wicked so often in the last few days that at one point I thought I might be in Oz.
We walked around Portland for most of Sunday afternoon and then drove to our bungalow at Hidden Pond Resort in Kennebunkport.
When I travel, my top interest is always the accommodations. I don't subscribe to the thought that you only sleep there.
The hotel/resort is everything to me.
This place did not disappoint.
We stayed at Bungalow #44, entitled Tryst.
I found that to be too hilarious.
T kept telling me, " I don't tryst anything you say."
Snarf.
We kept that fireplace going the entire time, and we loved this outdoor shower.
It was between 40-50 degrees each day, but that shower got so hot and the water pressure was just too good to pass up.
Plus, I don't usually have this view each morning from my own shower!
The resort had this cute station wagon parked in front of the lodge.
We were provided with a list of activities when we checked in. On Sunday evening there was a mixology class at the bar.
We eagerly showed up for our tutorial, expecting a group of people.
It was us.
And the bartender.
Things started out a bit awkwardly, but then he warmed up and we spent about an hour laughing and drinking with this darling guy.
He explained how to make the drinks, and how many of the ingredients came from the farm on the property.
The restaurant on site is called Earth, and is quite popular among the foodie crowd on the East coast, or so we were told.
We aren't foodies.
Phrases like " a smoky aura on your tongue" makes me want to cackle.
We stepped into one of the private dining rooms before we were shooed out.
Meanwhile, Genevieve went to an Apple festival with Abby and Papi. She got a new Minnie hair bow and took several evening rides on the golf cart with Papi.
On Monday morning we strolled down the beach. The weather was sunny but very windy.
Genevieve also enjoyed a stroll on the golf course behind Eddie and Patsy's house.
Our property provided beach cruisers and Trinity encouraged me to try to ride a bike.
I loathe bikes.
T bought me one about 4 years ago and I think I've ridden it 6 times.
I feel so long and awkward with my knees up like a grasshopper.
Plus I'm terrified of falling.
I'm riding.
I'm riding!
And I'm off!
I ruled that road, I tell you!
I sent the pictures to my family to prove my bravery and my brother said he couldn't stop humming the theme of the Wicked Witch of the West.
Why?
Because I'm wicked awesome and smaaaat when I ride a bike!
The foliage was gorgeous, so I seized this photo opportunity.
We ate like kings for all four days. I think we had seafood for lunch and dinner each day. I discovered a love of clam chowdah and lobster bisque.
Maine also loves its blueberries.
We had several pieces of pie too.
This was a great escape from my usual cake consumption.
There was a fire pit about 60 yards from our bungalow and they hosted a nightly s'more event.
Think blankets, adirondack chairs, and someone bringing you apple cider.
I wish I got a picture but I was too busy trying to avoid a stray ember burn.
We visited a lighthouse on Wednesday.
The ocean got pretty angry. All of the new stations continued to report on an incoming Nor'easter, which is like a crazy rainstorm, I guess.
They also report a lot about bears on the news.
They are the equivalent of Indiana raccoons.
Only bigger with the possibility of eating your face.
Speaking of faces...
the wind was treacherous making my already thick thighs look even bigger.
Thanks a lot, Nor'easter.
G spent her time walking in a much more temperate climate.
She chased turtles and looked for acorns.
On our final day Trinity pulled into a road side seafood dive and faced the ultimate challenge.
He decided he would eat a 3 Lobstah Lunch.
You heard that correctly.
He was successful.
The woman behind the counter had to come over and give him a 10 minute lesson on how to actually get all of the meat out to eat, but he was a good listener.
He also got a lesson on lobster anatomy.
Yikes.
The quote of the trip:
"Betsy, I just ate 3 lobsters, and they were all female!"
Good Lord, save me.
On our final night we braved the blustery rain for dinner at The Tide Beach Club, which was the sister property. Did you know hotels had sisters?
We spent our days driving around the beautiful and small Maine towns of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Biddeford, Kittery and York.
We watched 3 movies in our little cabin and drank lots of coffee by the fire.
I took a yoga class daily and Trinity ran on the beach each day.
My husband wore the same shirt for 3 nights in a row to dinner.
I didn't notice until I looked at the pictures.
It was another great Betsy-Trinity trip, which we think are healthy to get away as a couple.
Genevieve had an equally great time with Abby and Papi.
